The NBA season—and Ricky Rubio’s stateside career—is only a month old, and yet it seems like experts have backpedaled marathon miles on their prognostications about how the Spaniard’s rookie season might play out. Almost nine assists and eleven points per game; third among Western Conference guards on the first and second returns of All-Star ballots; January frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. It’s sort of strange that we’re all surprised by this. After all, basketball brains never seemed to deny that Rubio harbored a well of talent; it was more a matter translation. As he’d worked it for years in Spanish pro ball, could Rubio, in the NBA, make it look as though he was the only player on the court capable of a consummate bounce pass? Or, more specifically, (the answer is apparently yes) capable of a consummate bounce pass through Dirk Nowitzki’s legs.

If David Kahn doesn’t get Kevin Love signed to an extension for the most money he can offer by the 25th of this month, it will be the biggest KAAAAHHHHHNNNNNN moment of his illustrious KAAAAHHHNNNNNN career. Via the Pioneer Press:

Look for the Timberwolves to offer Kevin Love a $60 million, four-year contract extension within the next eight days.

Love, 23, who is playing for $4.6 million this season, can become a restricted free agent after the season unless he signs an extension before Jan. 25. If he opts for free agency, the Wolves would have the right to match any outside offer. Love also can return to Minnesota in 2012-13 for $6.1 million and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.erwolves to offer Kevin Love a $60 million, four-year contract extension within the next eight days.

Wolves President David Kahn isn’t commenting on contract talks, and Love says he’s unaware of the status of negotiations. The Wolves, though, want to get Love signed by next week.

Ricky Rubio is currently 7th in assists in the league and leading all rookies in the category. He is also shooting three pointers at a great clip — though a small sample, admittedly, [at 11 makes on 25 attempts] — and if he continues at this pace he will probably win Rookie of the Year (R.O.Y.) without a legitimate challenger.

Moreover, if he does pick up the R.O.Y., he will become the third member of the draft class of 2009 to have won it. (It’s such an odd circumstance to see three guys from the same draft class play their first season in three different years and then be this good, doing so. The other two are: Tyreke Evans and Blake Griffin.) Anyway, Ricky ain’t so bad, for a guy who was roundly ridiculed for being too soft to play in America, eh?
